How to Start Gold Panning

Gold panning is the process of looking for gold in rivers or streams. It is typically done with a pan, which is a special dish used to look for the metal. Throughout history, people have been doing this since ancient times, and it still remains very popular today.

Gold Panning Techniques - How to Pan for Gold

Gold panning is a relatively simple process. In order to find gold, you will need to find a location where you are going to search. This can be in a river, stream, or even a dry wash. Once you have found a good spot, it is time to start looking for gold!

There are two main techniques for gold panning: placer mining and hard rock mining. Placer mining is when you look for gold that has already been washed away from its original source. Hard rock mining is when you look for gold that is still in the rock.

Both of these methods can be done with just a few supplies. For placer mining, all you need is a shovel, sluice box, and a pan. For hard rock mining, you will need a pickaxe and a pan.

To do this, simply scoop up some sand and gravel from the river bottom with your shovel or pickaxe. Then, swirl the material around in your pan. The heavy particles of gold will settle to the bottom while the lighter materials float away. You can then remove the gold nuggets and flakes from your pan and put them into a container.

Gold Panning Equipment

Gold panning equipment is relatively simple and inexpensive. The most important piece of equipment is a pan. Other pieces of mining equipment that you may need include a shovel, pickaxe, sluice box, and container to store your gold in.

Some equipment you need for gold panning include:

• Suction bottle
• A magnifier

A gold pan is essentially an aluminum or plastic pan with sloping sides to separate gold from other materials. Gold pans come in various sizes, the most common being from 10 to 15 inches in diameter.

During the Gold Rush, sluice boxes and shaker tables with black sand were used by gold miners to find placer gold, but they were much less sophisticated than contemporary versions. In the early days, Mercury was used to separate gold from other materials in mines, but this process is no longer used and is dangerous. Nowadays, there are many different kinds of machines that can be used for gold panning. These include shaker tables, suction dredges, and centrifugal concentrators.

A sluice box is a long, narrow container with riffles (small ridges) along the bottom. Water washes the dirt and gravel over the riffles, separating the gold from other lighter materials like black sand - a mix of different types of rock and minerals, including magnetite, ilmenite, chromite, and garnet.

Black sand is often found near areas where gold has been found in the past. This is because it is heavier than other materials and can be used to separate gold from lighter materials.

Sluice boxes are great for fine gold recovery. Many different sluice boxes are available, including:

• Wooden
• Plastic, and 
• Metal models, but most modern sluice boxes are made of aluminum. 

When you are panning for gold, you should wear gloves and a dust mask to protect yourself from the particles. You should also have a first aid kit on hand in case of any accidents.

Before you start gold panning, check with your local government to make sure that it is legal to do so, especially on state and national lands like national forests and parks. Check for mining claims on these lands. Once you have all of the necessary permits, it is time to start your adventure!
