King of Garrett ACE metal detectors line up, the Garrett ACE 400 includes advanced features like Iron Audio, Digital Target ID, and Frequency Adjust to help you dig more treasure and less trash. Includes headphones, environmental coverup, coil cover and the five additional bonus items shown in the main photo above. Be sure to read our Guide Comparing the Garrett Ace 200, 300 and 400 metal detectors and our guide Comparing the Garrett Ace 400 versus the AT Pro metal detectors.

Garrett Ace 400 Metal Detector - Top Unit in the Garrett ACE Metal Detectors Line Up

The flagship of the ACE lineup is the ACE 400, which features the Iron Audio™ feature made popular on the company’s AT Pro™ and AT Gold™ detectors. Iron Audio allows the user to hear discriminated iron and to alter the detector’s mid-tone signal range. This helps the operator hear the iron content in flat steel objects like bottle caps and washers that sometimes trick a detector into reporting them as good targets.

The ACE 400 includes a higher, 10 kHz frequency to provide better sensitivity to low and medium conductivity targets, such as gold and lead. The detector’s Frequency Adjust feature allows users to easily toggle between slight frequency shifts to help eliminate interference from other detectors or power sources. The ACE 400 ships with an 8.5”x11” DD-configuration PROformance searchcoil that has proven to be very popular with the company’s previous ACE™ 350 and EuroACE™ detectors. The ACE 400 includes five discrimination modes, electronic pinpointing, sensitivity adjustment, and High-Resolution Iron Discrimination.

Garrett Ace 400 is the best choice for hobbyists who want the most bang for their buck when metal detecting. Iron Audio, headphones, a cover for the search coil, an environmental cover, and more are included in this unit. The Ace 400 has the same deep searching 8.5" x 11" DD PROformance search coil as the more expensive AT series. It is definitely worth upgrading if your budget allows!

Here is what we thing sets the Garrett Ace 400 apart from the lower models in the line-up. This unit includes 8.5" x 11" DD PROformance™ submersible searchcoil. This is the same soil that ships with the Garrett AT Series. This search coil is an upgraded coil over the lower models in the line and is included with the Ace 400. You can also control the sensitivity and depth adjustments at the touch of a button. You will notice that through proper control of the 8 sensitivity depth adjustments you are able to maximize your finds and eliminate false signals.

With the advanced Iron Audio™ feature, you can discriminate iron targets and alter your mid-tone signal range to cancel out trash targets. This will save you from digging trash targets in areas with high levels of iron trash.

You will appreciate having the higher frequency of 10 kHz for a better ability to find a wider range of targets. The adjustable frequency provides more good target options and better accuracy in the field. It is important to note that the Ace 400 has target identification features for u.s. coins. The garrett ace 400i is the international version of this metal detector and not designed for use in the United States.

As an upgrade from the base Garrett metal detector model, this unit includes a pinpoint feature. Using the integrated pinpoint mode, you can quickly locate your target by zooming in on the target. This advanced model includes five different search modes. In addition to the jewelry and coins modes, there's also a custom mode and a zero discrimination mode. There is a preset mode for every treasure hunter. You can choose a mode ideal for cache hunting, relic hunting, treasure hunting and even some basic gold prospecting and more. If you decide to focus on prospecting, there are dedicated gold detectors like the Garrett AT gold. The all metal mode is perfect for finding precious metal targets, i.e. gold.

A Garrett ClearSound headphone, the Ace environmental cover, and a search coil cover are included with this model. When in use, the search coil cover is left on while treasure hunting and protects the coil from wear. The unit operates at a frequency of 10 kHz, which is an ideal frequency for most targets. There is an improvement over the base models in terms of Iron discrimination. The model is the best at identifying iron in trash filled or iron laden hunt sites. Now you can easily find all u.s. coin denominations while hunting around junk. You can hone your skills by joining a metal detecting club in your area.

Ask a question about this product

It looks like this Garrett ACE 400 package comes with 2 search heads??
Question by: RonC on Jun 28, 2017, 2:43 PM Link
Actually the Ace 400 metal detector package pictures a coil cover, that is a skid plate that protects the epoxy on the bottom of the search coil.....
Answer by: detector reviews on Jun 28, 2017, 2:47 PM
How deep will this unit recognize metals? Does it show the target depth?
Question by: Gary B. on Jan 7, 2018, 2:32 PM Link
The Garrett ACE 400 has a maximum depth of approx. 9-12 inches, depending on ground conditions, as well as the size and composition of the target. It does offer a depth indicator on the right side of the display. It is able to tell you the depth in increments of 2, 4, 6, and 8+ inches
Answer by: on Feb 14, 2018, 4:13 PM
Is the Garrett ACE 400 water proof and does it use head phones? Are the headphones Included in the bonus pack?
Question by: Paul Andrzejewski on Sep 13, 2016, 8:04 AM Link
The Garrett ACE 400 is waterproof UP TO the control box, but the control box itself IS NOT waterproof. The Garrett ACE 400 has a 1/4-inch headphones jack. The headphones are included in the bonus pack offered.
Answer by: metal detector reviews on Feb 6, 2018, 12:35 PM
It says the coil is waterproof. Does that mean you can submerge the coil in Fresh/saltwater? If so how far on the detector can you submerge before it will fail. I.e. up to just below the monitor?
Question by: Tim S on Aug 6, 2017, 8:43 PM Link
Great question, and you are exactly correct! This unit is waterproof UP TO the control box, but the control box itself is NOT WATERPROOF!
Answer by: on Feb 9, 2018, 11:34 AM
Is the Garrett ACE 400 rain-proof?
Question by: BOB on Aug 22, 2017, 12:15 PM Link
No, but this package does come with an environmental cover for the ACE 400 if you want to make sure the control box stayed clean and dry.
Answer by: on Feb 9, 2018, 12:11 PM
How does it compare with the Garrett AT PRO?
Question by: ken on Feb 22, 2017, 10:42 PM Link
The Garrett ACE 400 is the top of the line, entry level model made by Garrett. It is a great detector to learn on, but will not have some of the more advanced capabilities of the AT Pro. Some of those more advanced features include ground balance, a higher operating frequency, waterproof capabilities, and a more rugged frame.

Can the Garrett Ace 400 be used on salt-water beaches?
Question by: Jose Garcia on Jun 25, 2016, 12:28 PM Link
The Garrett ACE 400 has a preset ground balance, and is not the best choice for the wet sand on a salt-water beach. Dry sand only! Here is an article we wrote about metal detecting on a beach, as well as some solid recommendations!
Answer by: metal detector reviews on Feb 6, 2018, 9:19 AM
How small of a nuget will the ace 400 detect, placed on a non magnet surface? And with the wand that I got with the ace 400?
Question by: Randy Conner on Feb 8, 2019, 12:02 PM Link
The ACE 400 is calibrated for coins, jewelry, and relics, but if you come across a nugget large enough, it will find it. Garrett does not offer a breakpoint, or size threshold for targets, but the bigger the better. If you were looking for very small nuggets, you may want to consider this smaller search coil:
Answer by: on Feb 11, 2019, 10:39 AM
the coil cover is that for use at all times or just for storage
Question by: paul on Feb 20, 2019, 12:50 PM Link
We would always suggest detecting with a coil cover on. It prevents the coil itself from getting scratched up and damaged over time. It does not affect the performance.
Answer by: on Feb 21, 2019, 9:36 AM
what is the maximum depth of this detector for large object?
Question by: vyankates on Sep 19, 2018, 1:24 AM Link
The maximum depth of this detector is approximately 10-12 inches or so, depending on ground conditions, as well as the size and composition of the target.
Answer by: on Sep 19, 2018, 2:55 PM
Can I put different heads on this detector?
Question by: Robert on Dec 20, 2019, 1:13 PM Link
Yes, you can see the other search coils listed under "compatible accessories" on the product page.

are the head phones wireless??
Question by: DON DILLMAN on Dec 5, 2018, 10:15 AM Link
No, the ACE 400 does not have a wireless component. That being said, Garrett does make a wireless kit that would allow you to use wireless headphones, and their new Z-Lynk pointer. Here is that setup:
